Desolvating (DV)-ICP-MS

The Aridus desolvating sample introduction system incorporates a low-flow, fluoropolymer nebulizer (T1H) with performance equivalent to or better than higher flow concentric nebulizers. With the system, sample solvent vapor is effectively removed, so interferences such as oxides and hydrides from injected water are significantly reduced (e.g., CeO/Ce less than 0.05%) and analyte sensitivity is enhanced.

Aridus Desovalting Sample Introduction System ( from CETAC)

Basically, liquid sample is nebulized into a PTFE spray chamber using a T1H microconcentric nebulizer with flow rate of 60 µL/min. The spray chamber is heated at 70 oC to reduce the formation of solvent droplets inside the spray chamber. The vapor from the spray chamber then enters a heated microporous PTFE tubular membrane (at 165 oC). A counter-current flow of argon sweep gas is used to remove solvent vapors which permeate the membrane. Analyte passes through the middlre of the membrane tube to ICP-MS torch. A schematic of the Aridus is shown below.

Determination of rare earth elements (REE) in the low Mississippi River water is an example of such applications of using an Aridus desolvating sample introduction system. High Ba concentration of the low Mississippi River water prevent the determination of Eu by standard solution introduction system due to the BaO interference on Eu. However, the BaO interference is negligible using the Aridus desolvating sample introduction system.
